Short answer: there is no single best subscription. If you want one general-purpose assistant, the $20 per month tiers from OpenAI (ChatGPT Plus) and Anthropic (Claude Pro, $20 monthly, or $17 per month shown for annual billing) are the two plans most worth comparing first. Choose Google if you also want cloud storage and Google services bundled in. Perplexity and Grok are worth it only if their specific products (search-first answers, or the xAI ecosystem) are what you need, and for both of those I could not confirm current prices from an official page. Prices checked on 2026-10-10; they change often, so confirm on the vendor page before you pay.
How this comparison was built
Plan names and prices below come only from each vendor’s own pages. Where I could not read a price on an official page I say “price not confirmed” and link the page instead of guessing. Features listed are the ones the vendor itself lists, not benchmark or quality claims.

What each vendor says you get
ChatGPT
OpenAI’s pricing document lists Free, Go ($8), Plus ($20) and Pro (from $100). It states that all plans share usage between ChatGPT Work and Codex, and that usage varies by model complexity and task size rather than message count alone. Plus is described as covering web, CLI, IDE extension and iOS, with cloud integrations such as automatic code review. The Pro tiers are listed at $100, $200 or $500, with the $500 tier including Ultrafast mode. That page is written around Codex (OpenAI’s coding agent), so it says little about non-coding ChatGPT features; check chatgpt.com/pricing for the full consumer feature list.
Claude
Anthropic’s page lists Free with chat on web, desktop and mobile, web search, file creation, code running and memory across conversations. Pro adds more usage, Claude Code, more Claude models, Projects (which also has a limited free version), and Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365. Max is “Everything in Pro, plus” a choice of 5x or 20x more usage than Pro, higher output limits, early access to advanced features, priority access at high traffic times, and $100 to $200 per month in API credits.
Gemini
Google bundles AI with storage and other services. Per the Gemini page, Plus includes 400 GB of storage and Gemini Notebook; Pro includes 5 TB of storage, YouTube Premium Lite, Google Home Premium, and 4x usage limits; Ultra adds up to 20x usage limits, Project Genie, a YouTube Premium individual membership, and 20 TB or more of storage. Free includes 15 GB of storage.
Perplexity
Perplexity’s help center lists a Pro and a Max plan, but I could not confirm their prices or feature lists from an official page, so I am not listing them. Check its pricing page and its plan comparison help article.
Grok
xAI’s announcement names three paid tiers: SuperGrok, SuperGrok Plus and SuperGrok Heavy, and says Grok Bot is included in all three. Separately, xAI’s documentation says paid plans draw from “a single weekly usage allowance you can spend however you like”; Grok Bot usage is tracked separately from that allowance, so the two should not be read as one pool. Prices were not readable from an official page, so see x.ai/pricing.
Decision guide
- You want one paid assistant for everyday writing, research and coding: compare ChatGPT Plus ($20) and Claude Pro ($17 annual, $20 monthly) directly. Both cost $20 per month when billed monthly; try the free tiers first and pay for the one you actually hit limits on.
- You want the cheapest paid tier: ChatGPT Go costs $8 in US dollars and Google AI Plus costs €4.99 on the German page. These are different currencies and markets, so compare them in your own region.
- You already live in Google Drive, Gmail and YouTube: Google AI Pro bundles 5 TB of storage and YouTube Premium Lite with Gemini; the other plans compared here do not list those.
- You hit usage limits daily on a $20 plan: the $100 tiers (ChatGPT Pro from $100, Claude Max from $100 with 5x or 20x Pro usage) exist for this. Google’s Ultra starts at €99.99 on the German page. Usage multiples are measured against each vendor’s own lower tier, so they are not directly comparable across companies.
- You want Claude Code specifically: Anthropic lists it under Pro and above.
- You want Perplexity or Grok: confirm the current price on the vendor page first; I could not verify it.
Before you pay
Usage limits, bundled models and prices are changed frequently, and regional prices differ. Everything above reflects the vendor pages as read on 2026-10-10, and prices on them may not include taxes.
