  • Words per token: "A token is about 4 characters; 100 tokens are about 60-80 English words." (ai.google.dev)
  • Tokenizer: o200k_base, gpt-tokenizer 3.4.0 (MIT). Used by GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, GPT-5 and o-series per tiktoken model.py. tiktoken 0.14.0 does not map GPT-6 models to an encoding, so counts for them are estimates. (github.com)

The ratio it uses

Google’s Gemini documentation says a token is about four characters and that 100 tokens are about 60 to 80 English words. The converter shows the middle of that range as its main figure and both ends beneath it, so you can see how much the answer can move.

For a figure based on your own writing, open “Measure the ratio with your own writing” and paste a few paragraphs. The tool counts them with OpenAI’s o200k tokenizer and replaces the general ratio with yours.

Questions

How many tokens is a page?

The converter treats a page as 500 words, a common figure for a single-spaced page of prose. With 60 to 80 words per 100 tokens, that is roughly 630 to 830 tokens.

Why does my language need more tokens than English?

Tokenizers learn their pieces from training text that is mostly English, so other languages, especially those with non-Latin scripts, are usually cut into more, smaller pieces. Measure a sample of your own text to see the real ratio.
